How We Test

What we check before we describe a background-removal result as good.

This page describes the checks behind our guides and tool descriptions. It is a practical review process, not a laboratory benchmark, and we describe it here so you can judge how much weight to give our conclusions.

How results are assessed

We run an image through the tool and inspect the output at full size against both a light and a dark background, because most edge problems are invisible on white. We compare the cutout with the original to confirm that nothing belonging to the subject was removed and that no background fragments were kept.

Types of images we look at

  • People, including portraits with loose and tied-back hair.
  • Animals with fur of varying length and colour.
  • Products on plain and cluttered surfaces, including white items on white.
  • Logos and flat graphics with thin lettering.
  • Reflective, transparent and semi-transparent items such as glass and sheer fabric.
  • Difficult cases: motion blur, low light, heavy compression and busy patterned backdrops.

Edge-quality checks

  • Are individual hair strands preserved, or clipped into a solid outline?
  • Is there a light or dark halo left from the original background?
  • Are straight edges clean rather than stepped?
  • Have small gaps — between an arm and a body, or inside a handle — been cleared?
  • Has colour from the old background bled into the subject's edge?

Transparency and export checks

We confirm the downloaded file is a PNG with a real alpha channel, that partially transparent pixels survive, and that placing the file over several background colours produces no visible box. We also check that the output keeps the resolution we expect and carries no watermark.

Device and browser testing

Because background removal runs in your browser, we check the tool on current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge on desktop, and on recent iOS and Android phones. Touch interactions, drag-and-drop, the file picker and the download step are each checked separately, since they behave differently on mobile.

Privacy verification

For the background remover we watch the browser's network activity during a full upload-to-download cycle to confirm the image itself is not transmitted. For the tools that do use cloud processing, we confirm the request happens only after you press the action button, and that the page states this before you start.

Limitations of this process

  • Our image set is a working selection, not a statistically representative sample.
  • Edge quality is judged visually, so there is an element of subjective assessment.
  • We cannot cover every device, browser version or camera.
  • Results change as the underlying technology changes, so older observations may age.
  • We do not publish accuracy percentages or benchmark scores, because we have not carried out formal documented measurements that would support them.
